Representation meeting

• The Representation meeting is a regular video chat meeting where we discuss representation together.
• It always takes place on the last Monday of the month at 19:00.
• The whole thing takes place via video chat which does not require any software installation.
• It is open to those just starting out as well as the very experienced.

The coordination around the presentation meetings is done by Frauke.

The representation meeting is a regular online meeting where we discuss representation together. It is first and foremost a meeting where we explore the background of representation. Through the discussion of our knowledge, methods and practices, our academic background improves. In short, we build our historical knowledge and scientific skills to achieve a better basis for our future representation.

Thematically, the meeting is very open and depends on the interests of the participants. Anything from big concepts to everyday objects to detailed special interest can occur. Previous meetings have had, for example, the topics of trousers, headgear, supporting beginners, specific representation of a Heyden Wallis and representation errors in a computer graphic. Future meetings could (but do not have to) deal with the following:

• Finding items of clothing (tunics, shoes, dresses …).
• Making garments (material, material processing, decorations …)*
• Accessories and everyday objects (jewellery, cups, benches …)
• Focus on a craft (pottery, blacksmithing, needle binding …)*
• Everyday life (food & cooking, customs, social structures …)
• Camp life (Who? What? How? Where? Why? …)
• Specific sources (finds from grave XY, texts from AB, pictures from the KL collection …)
• I have this display and would like feedback.
• I visited a cool exhibition and want to show you pictures/stuff.

(*This is primarily not about today's practical production, but about finds and methods that existed historically. So not sewing instructions, but „these stitches were found on such and such a tunic“).

So there is a wide range of potential topics, which of course may be freely combined („Social differences in the graves of Haithabu“, „Nails in shoe soles over the centuries“, „Geographical variations of eating bowl decoration in the 11th century“ …). The most important thing is to find something that might interest both you and others so that a good discussion can take place during the meetings. So if you want to address a very narrow special topic, consider whether you could expand it with other topics. (E.g. Is the development of hobnails different from that of wooden nails? How are hobnails related to shoe cuts? …)

The representation meeting takes place every last Monday of the month at 7pm online in the Heydenwall chat room. The meeting lasts about 2 hours. To log in to the chat room see below.

Before each representation meeting there are 1-2 people who can prepare 1-2 topic/themes to lead the meeting (see below for more information).

At the beginning of the meeting a minute taker is chosen. The minutes should, if possible, summarise the results of the discussion. The minutes can also readily mention who is chairing the meeting, who took the minutes and who was present.

The meeting is then structured and conducted by the leaders using the prepared materials. During the meeting, additional material can be brought in and discussed. The leaders structure the discussion.

The main part of the meeting lasts about 2 hours. Afterwards, you are welcome to stay in the chat room, but the main discussion and the minutes will be over. If the topic meets with further approval, this can lead to another prepared meeting.

Both the content and the form of the meetings are open to suggestions. If you have ideas on how to improve the meetings, please let us know!

Tips for giving a presentation at the presentation meeting

The easiest way to connect is using a computer with a microphone and webcam attached, but tablets and mobile phones are also possible. A microphone and webcam are not absolutely necessary for just watching. You can also get involved via the chat function of the video chat. It is also possible to dial in several times with different devices. For example, because the sound on the PC does not work, transmit the sound with the mobile phone and the picture with the PC. In any case, you need an internet connection with the device.

External users receive the connection data via an e-mail after they have registered as guests.
